HOW IT WORKS

Entries are now open for 2022 - Register Now!
OnScreen is a digital opportunity for high school students that challenges you to create an original short film, documentary or music video of up to 7 minutes. Think about how to take your film to the next level with set locations, editing, wardrobe, special effects and creative elements!

Filmmakers creating a music video can use our library of past Smokefreerockquest songs, or any original, unsigned music.

OnScreen is free to enter and open to all school students across Aotearoa.

Our goal is to facilitate students learning new skills, trying new things and taking on creative leadership. We encourage you to run your production like a real film set and assign roles to key leadership students - e.g. Director, Producer, Screenwriter, Cameraperson, Audio Technician, Editor, Lighting Technician, Performer and Animator!

To get involved, create a student film team and register via the OnScreen website - you will then receive the OnScreen Manual with all information on planning a shoot, key dates, rules and tips.

There is also a Junior section of OnScreen for student filmmakers Y1-8: submit any original short film of up to 5 mins and be in to win $500!

Final registration date is 22 Sept 2023 and all films are due by 18 October 2023.

Film SECTIONS

There are 3 sections:

Narrative Short Film
In this section you can make any kind of short film you like - funny, serious, dramatic, animated, scary or a combo of all of the above!

Documentary
You can tackle a serious topic, something close to your heart, something you are wanting to learn about or try your hand at a funny mockumentary!

Music Video
Think music videos, a musical or narrative film all about music. All music must be original or royalty-free - this is a great opportunity to link up with a friend’s band to create an epic music video.
